Es sind nur noch wenige Tage bis zu eurer Show in Wieze, wo ihr eure erste DVD aufzeichnen werdet. Steigt die Anspannung langsam?

Tosso: Ja, irgendwie schon. Wir sind glücklich, das Metal Female Voices Fest in Belgien headlinen zu können und natürlich ist es eine besondere Show, weil unsere DVD an diesem Tag aufgenommen wird und wir den Besuchern das Bestmögliche bieten möchten. Es kommen also mehrere Faktoren zusammen: Festivalheadlinershow, DVD-Produktion und einige spezielle visuelle Komponenten in der Live-Show. Das wird aufregend und richtig Laune machen.

Bereitet ihr euch abgesehen von der Bühnenshow irgendwie besonders auf dieses Konzert vor? Etwa mit zusätzlichen Proben oder ähnlichem?

Ja, es wird zusätzliche Proben geben in einer Halle in der Nähe unseres Studios. Dort können wir inklusive der Bühnenelemente und allem was sonst noch auf der Bühne abgehen wird, proben.

Ihr habt bekanntlich extra für diese Show ein großes Wikingerschiff für euer Bühnenbild bauen lassen. Wie wird selbiges zum Zuge kommen und wie kam diese Idee zu Stande?

as Wikingerschiff wird echt der Knaller. Es ist ca. 10 Meter lang und 4,5 Meter hoch und wird unter der Regie unseres Lichtmanns und visuellen DVD-Maestros Stefan „Leebee“ Liebhauser gebaut. Die Bauarbeiten werden just diese Tage abgeschlossen. Auf Vinland Saga beginnt das Intro mit Livs Worten: „1000 years ago a viking ship left norway in the spring“. In Anlehnung daran und die ganze Konzeptgeschichte von Vinland Saga lag es auf der Hand, dies auch optisch live umzusetzen. Das Schiff wird direkt in das Bühnenbild integriert sein, man wird quasi eine Band auf dem Schiff sehen können. Ich denke mal die Fans können sich hier wirklich auf etwas Besonderes freuen. Die Idee kam uns lustigerweise in Buenos Aires bereits im Frühjahr 2006 als wir in Südamerika auf Tour waren und uns über das Konzept für eine spezielle DVD Show unterhielten. Seitdem arbeiten wir quasi daran und bis wir das Metal Female Voices als Austragungsort auserkoren hatten, gab es schon sehr viele Ideen, wo wir diese Show spielen könnten. Obwohl sehr viele Promoter und Festivalveranstalter in aller Welt Interesse hatten, haben wir uns letztendlich entschlossen, das Ganze in Belgien im Rahmen dieses besonderen Festivals steigen zu lassen! Und wie man sieht, scheint die Idee mit dem Wikingerschiff ja nicht nur gut bei den Festivalveranstaltern angekommen zu sein - it’s a small world!

Habt ihr ansonsten noch weitere Deko oder Pyroeffekte in Planung, von der ihr vorab schon etwas verraten möchtet?

Es werden in Wieze auch jede Menge Pyroeffekte und Projektionen zu sehen sein. Lasst euch diesbezüglich einfach überraschen.

Ihr habt kürzlich eine längere US Tour hinter euch gebracht und habt jetzt noch einmal wenige Wochen frei, bevor die Show auf dem Metal Female Voices Fest über die Bühne gehen wird. Seht ihr diese Tour als eine Art Generalprobe an und habt ihr dort schon konkrete Abläufe oder Songs für die DVD-Show ausprobiert?

Tatsächlich gab es in den USA und Kanada ein paar Livepremieren, und sicherlich werden wir ein paar Songs, die wir auf der US-Tour gespielt haben, auch in Wieze zum Besten geben. Es wird aber auch Material zu hören sein, das wir noch nie live gespielt haben. So gesehen ist eine Tour immer gutes Training um die eigenen Live-Qualitäten fit zu halten, eine Generalprobe für die DVD-Show war die USA-Tour aber sicherlich nicht. Zumal man auf Flugreisen auch mit dem Equipment und Bühnenelementen doch etwas limitiert ist. Ganz im Gegensatz zum Konzert in Wieze.

Wenn ich mich nicht irre, werdet ihr eine etwa 90-minütige Show spielen. Was dürfen die Fans in musikalischer Hinsicht erwarten? Wird es Überraschungen geben, etwa in Form einer Coverversion oder einer B-Seite wie „Senses Capture“, das ihr zuletzt auch auf Tour gespielt habt?

Es wird bei der DVD-Show einen bunten Streifzug durch die bisherigen Veröffentlichungen von Leaves Eyes geben. Ein abwechslungsreiches Set mit viel Dynamik und auch mit einem Gastmusiker.

Warum ist gerade das Metal Female Voices Fest eurer Meinung nach genau der richtige Rahmen für eine solche Show, die immerhin für die Ewigkeit festgehalten werden soll?

Es gibt natürlich ein paar zwingend notwendige Voraussetzungen für diese Show. Zum einen brauchen wir für die optische Umsetzung eine große Bühne, was in Wieze gewährleistet ist. Zudem ist es einfach ein schöner Gedanke, die DVD auf diesem Festival zu filmen. Wir haben hier bereits 2005 gespielt und viel Spaß gehabt und kehren nun als Headliner zurück. Das passt einfach.

Gab es auch Planungen diese Show an anderer Stelle über die Bühne gehen zu lassen?

Ja, wir hatten auch die Idee, die DVD in Südamerika oder auch Kanada zu drehen. Letzten Endes ist aber die organisatorische Abwicklung solch einer großen Bühnen- und Filmproduktion hier in Europa doch etwas einfacher. Wenn ich allein an unsere US-Tour denke, wo die Fluggesellschaft Teile unseres Equipments verloren und Wochen später beschädigt angeliefert hat. Das wäre eine Horrorvorstellung für unsere DVD-Show

Was plant ihr derzeit neben der Live-Show noch mit auf die DVD zu packen? Auf eurer Tour mit Kamelot durch Europa wurde bei den Shows regelmäßig per Camcorder von der Bühne gefilmt und außerdem wart ihr mit einer Fan-Cam unterwegs. Kann man schon absehen, ob und falls ja wie viel von diesem Material später enthalten sein wird? Und steht nicht sogar eine Doppel-DVD im Raum?

Es wird neben dem Konzert in Wieze, das übrigens den Titel „En saga i Belgia“ tragen wird, eine Art von Leaves’ Eyes Film geben. In verschiedenen Kapiteln wird die Band Leaves’ Eyes in dem Film beleuchtet und natürlich werden die Fans selbst nicht zu kurz kommen. Wir haben eigentlich von Beginn an unglaublich viel bei Leaves’ Eyes mitgefilmt und dokumentiert. Die eigentliche Arbeit kommt aber noch, nämlich diese riesige Informationsflut von Stunden von Filmmaterial zu einem spannenden Film zusammenzuschneiden.

It’s only few days to your show in Wieze, where you will record your first DVD. Is the strain yet rising?

In some way yes. We are happy to headline the Female Voices Fest in Belguim and of course it is a special show, because our DVD is recorded on that day and we want to satisfy the visitors in the best possible way. So several factors are brought into contact: Headlining a festival, a DVD production and some special visual components for the live show. It will be exciting and a lot of fun.

Do you prepare in a special way for that concert, apart from the stage show? For instance by doing additional rehearsals or the like?

Yes, there will be additional rehearsals in an arena near to our studio. We can practise there including all show elements and anything that will go off on stage.

It is known that you have a big viking ship built just for that show. In which way will it appear and how did it come about?

The viking ship will be a real smash! It is 10 meters long, 4,5 meters tall and it is built under administration of Stefan “Leebee” Liebhauser who is our light man and the visual DVD-Maestro. The construction will be finished within the next few days. The Intro of “Vinland Saga” starts with Liv saying “1000 years ago a viking ship left norway in the spring“. In dependence on that and the whole concept story behind Vinland Saga it was obvious to also optically represent it live. The ship will be integrated directly into the stage setting; you will sort of see a band on a ship. I think the fans can really look forward to something very special. Funnily enough, the idea occurred to us in Buenos Aires, yet in spring 2006 when we were on tour in South America and we were talking about the concept for a special DVD show. Since then we’ve been working on it, and when we had chosen the Metal Female Festival as the venue for that event, we already had lots of ideas where we could play that concert. Though many promoters and festival organizers worldwide were interested, we finally decided to do it in Belgium within that outstanding festival. And as you can see the idea of the Viking ship did go down well, not only with the festival organizers – it’s a small world. 

Are there plans for any other sceneries or pyros, that you want to reveal in advance?

Lots of pyros and projections will appear in Wieze. Just be in for a surprise! 

Recently you completed a more or less extensive US tour and now you have a few weeks off, before the show at the Female Voices Fest will take place. Is this tour in some way a dress rehearsal for you and did you concretely try some processes or songs for the DVD show?

Actually there were some live-premiers in the States and Canada, and of course some of the songs we played during the US tour will also appear in the set for Wieze. But there will also be some material that we’ve never played live before. From that point of view the tour is always a god training keeping our own live-qualities in shape, but the US tour was certainly no dress rehearsal for the DVD show. The more so as you are a bit limited concerning equipment and stage elements when travelling via airplane. Contrary to the show in Wieze.

Unless I’m very much mistaken you will play a show of about 90 minutes. What are the fans allowed to expect musically? Will there be any surprises, like a coverversion or a b-side like “Senses Capture”, which you also played on tour recently?

The DVD will be a reflection of all previous Leave’s Eyes releases. A diversified set with a lot of drive and also with a guest-musician.

Why do you regard the Metal Female Voices Fest as the right event for such a show? After all the show shall be captured for eternity.

Of course there are some urgently necessary requirements for that show. First we need a large stage in order to implement the visualisations, and this is something we get in Wieze. And also it is a nice thought to film the DVD during that festival. We already played there back in 2005, had a lot of fun and now we’ll return as the headliner. It just fits.

Did you also have plans to do that show at another location?

Yes, we also had the idea of filming the DVD in South America or Canada. But in the end the organisation of such a huge stage- and film-production is a little easier here in Europe. I only need to think about out tour across the States, when the airline lost parts of our equipment and weeks later when they delivered it, it was damaged. It would be horrible if that happened with our DVD show.

Besides the live show, what will presumably be put on the DVD? While you were touring with Kamelot, there were some shootings made from the stage with a camera and you were also wandering around with a fan cam. Can you somehow anticipate if and if yes how much of that material will be included? And didn’t you even talk about a double DVD?

Besides the concert in Wieze, which by the way will be called “En saga I Belgia”, there will be something like a “Leave’s Eyes movie”. In that move several chapters will throw a light on the band Leaves Eyes and of course the fans themselves will also not get a raw deal. Actually we filmed and documented a lot of stuff from the day we started Leave’s Eyes. But the essence of the work is yet to come. And that is cutting the information overload of some hours to an exciting film.
